Clinical Study 1
Extract of saffron (Crocus sativus L.) versus fluoxetine in mild–moderate depression: a double-blind, randomized pilot trial (Noorbala et al., 2005; Journal of Ethnopharmacology)
Design: 6-week, double-blind RCT; saffron 30 mg/day (BD) vs fluoxetine 20 mg/day (BD); parallel groups.
Participants: 40 adult outpatients with DSM-IV MDD, mild–moderate severity.
Key results:
- Saffron group felt a better mood from week 1 onward.
- Scores improved across the study weeks, showing steady progress through week 6.
- No significant side effect reported.
Why it matters: Clinical research shows meaningful mood support at 30 mg/day with a familiar, everyday-use profile. Useful when you want gentle, consistent support.
Clinical Study 2
Modulation of mood and cognitive performance following acute administration of Melissa officinalis (lemon balm) (Kennedy et al., 2002; Pharmacology Biochemistry & Behavior)
Design: Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, balanced crossover; single doses (300, 600, 900 mg) with repeated testing over 6 h.
Participants: 20 healthy young adults.
Key result: 300 mg dose increased self-rated calmness at the earliest time-points.
Why it matters: 300 mg lemon balm can help you settle your nerves quickly, useful for pre-bed wind-down.
Clinical Study 3
Saffron (Crocus sativus L.) in the Treatment of Mild to Moderate Depression: A Double-blind, Randomized and Placebo-controlled Trial (Akhondzadeh et al., 2005; Phytotherapy Research)
Design: 6-week RCT, saffron 30 mg/day vs placebo.
Participants: 40 adults outpatients with DSM-IV major depression (HAM-D ≥ 18).
Key results: Greater improvement on HAM-D vs placebo at week 6 (F(1, df)=18.89, p < 0.001); no significant difference in side-effects.
Why it matters for Cozey: With daily 30 mg, saffron steadily supports a better mood over a few weeks and is well-tolerated, making it easy to keep in your routine.
